Local Elections 2023 - G&I Group Statement - G&I Group announces candidates for the May 2023 district elections

1 February 2023

Witham and Braintree Green Party along with our Independent partners in the Green and Independent Group (G&I) yesterday announced our candidates for the May 2023 Braintree District Council elections.

There will be Green or Independent candidates in the majority of wards in the district with a total of 21 Greens and 10 Independents standing (*).

The G&I Group formed after the May 2019 district elections and is currently the main opposition to the Conservatives at BDC with 9 seats (**).

Overall, BDC has 49 seats and all of these are up for election in May along with all Town and Parish council seats in the district.

Cllr James Abbott, G&I Group Leader said:

“In the majority of wards in the district there will be a Green or Independent choice on the ballot paper and we will be making a strong challenge to win more seats in order to make positive changes at BDC after the elections.
Residents can Vote for Change at the May local elections.

Our top priorities remain; to support local communities and to protect the environment.

In our published Policy Platform we have set out reforms which we believe will make a difference, especially to involve all district councillors in decision-making, instead of the current centralised administration model; and sharing investment funding more fairly across the district - supporting villages as well as the towns.

We also believe it is important to make the planning system work for local communities so that they genuinely have a say on where development takes place, instead of the current situation where developers have too much control.

In 2019 after the elections that year the Greens and Independents decided to work together at BDC and after the elections this year we will do the same, as well as seeking to work cross-party with other groups whenever it is possible to do so.

Since 2019 the number of people supporting G&I has grown significantly and we are greatly encouraged by the range of candidates standing this year, including former Conservative and Labour councillors, adding to the experience of the G&I Group of councillors.

We look forward to meeting more residents ‘on the doorstep’ over the coming months to listen to their views and priorities for the district.”

(*) The Green candidates and the Independent candidates will each run their own campaigns and ballot papers will state candidates as such (ie “G&I” will not be on the ballot papers). This is in order to meet the requirements of election law.
There may be some more candidates announced before the election period proper starts in late March.

(**) The G&I Group currently includes 9 Braintree District councillors, 1 Essex County Councillor and 4 Witham Town Councillors.
A number of members also sit as Parish Councillors.
