Welcome to new members who have joined in the last month

30th anniversary event Friday, 12th July

We hope that members, supporters, families and friends can join us at 7pm on Friday 12th July for an evening event to celebrate 30 years since the founding of our local party.

It will be held in the Barn at Spring Lodge, Witham Community Centre, Powers Hall End, Witham CM8 2HE.

The venue is a short walk from Witham railway station and has plenty of free parking.

We are very pleased to confirm that the Deputy Leader of the Green Party, Amelia Womack, will join us for the evening. Amelia sent us a personal message of congratulations following our local election successes in May.

In the summer of 1989 there was a huge surge in interest in environmental issues and climate change was for the first time major news. The Green Party secured a big vote at the European elections, although no seats were won as it was then an election held under first-past-the-post.

There was at the time local parties in Braintree and Chelmsford, but not Witham. Following the European elections, and our first ever Witham candidate standing in local elections that May, a meeting was arranged in Witham library (not allowed now !) to see how much interest there might be in forming a Witham local party.

Over 40 people attended and it was agreed to form a Witham branch, which within a few years joined with Braintree to form what is now Witham & Braintree Green Party, covering the whole of Braintree District.

At the 30th anniversary event we will have some archive material on display that we have kept over the years, a few speeches and a short quiz on a green related theme - all questions relating to the period 1989-2019 !

Green and Independent Group - now 9

Our new group of councillors is now 9 strong following the decision by another Independent councillor to join us – so we now have 6 Greens and 3 Independents.

July is going to be a busy month at BDC with a series of meetings on the Local Plan although we have raised questions about the short notice for councillors – and residents – to consider a large amount of material.

At the next BDC Full Council meeting on Monday 22nd July there will be three motions for debate submitted by the G&I Group – including one on climate emergency and species extinction and another on opposing local library closures.

For many years BDC has not had an effective opposition group and so this will be the first time in a long while since major motions for debate have been tabled.

The meeting is open to anyone to attend – it starts at 7.15pm at the BDC offices, Causeway House, Bocking End, Braintree.

At the 9th July Essex County Council meeting there will also be a libraries motion debated and a few weeks later a big turnout is expected for the ECC Cabinet meeting on 23rd July when we expect the Conservatives will make their announcements on the future of many of our local libraries.

Save Our Libraries Essex (SOLE) are organising a gathering at 9am, meeting at the Saracens Head Hotel in central Chelmsford to then walk to and lobby the Cabinet meeting at County Hall.

Green Drinks

The next Green Drinks will be on Thursday 15th August at the Western Arms Silver End at 7.30pm.

There will not be a Green Drinks in July due to the 30th anniversary event.
