Big turnout for People's March for the Future

An estimated 700,000 people supported the People's March for the Future in London on 20th October.

The march supported calls for a vote on the final Brexit proposals – at a time when momentum for such a vote is increasing. A strong contingent of Greens attended including from local parties in Essex and a member of Maldon GP took the attached image which includes Caroline Lucas MP and Co-Leader of the Green Party Jonathan Bartley.

Local News

Braintree District Council's Planning Committee to be held on 20th November has been recommended to grant consent to Redrow homes to destroy over 350 metres of mature rural hedgerow at its development site on the outskirts of Silver End. This is despite the hedge being a local landscape feature, a bat habitat and containing numerous native hedge species. Repeated calls to Redrow to amend their plans to keep at least parts of the hedge were rejected by the company. The development is a housing estate of 350 houses with no on-site services or facilities.

Bellway have submitted an application to build on the Gimsons site, next to Witham's River Walk. If the plans are approved then most of the trees on the site will be destroyed, including all the trees fronting the Town Park.

Gent Fairhead are submitting yet more applications for their proposed waste incinerator at Rivenhall Airfield. These include a proposal to lower the height of the chimney stack to 35 metres from the 58 metres they have permission for. Yet in December 2016, a 35 metre high chimney stack was refused a license by the Environment Agency ! At a recent site liaison meeting it was pointed out to Gent Fairhead that it is now over 25 years since they first tried to build a waste facility on the old WW2 airfield and despite so many applications and consents that we have lost count, they have built exactly nothing !
