By-elections called following Tory resignations

There will be 2 district council by-elections, to be held on Thursday 3rd May. These are for Hatfield Peverel and Terling ward (HP&T) and Bocking North ward (BN). The Green candidates will be the same as for the 2015 elections – Jonathan Barker in HP&T and Dawn Holmes in BN.

The polling day is the same date as the local elections across England, although these 2 by-elections will be the only principal authority elections in Braintree District – due to the election cycle the next all-out elections here will be in 2019. There are wider elections in Essex in May – notably in next-door Colchester, but more of that below.

Colchester elections – can the Greens breakthrough this time ?

Having come very close to winning a seat in Castle ward previously, Colchester Greens are working hard to try to get Mark Goacher elected this time round. On 14th April they are holding an Action Day with a visit from Jenny Jones, Green Party Member of the House of Lords.

12.30pm-2pm - Lunch at Firstsite (Lewis Gardens, High Street, Colchester CO1 1JH), followed by a public Q&A with Jenny Jones

Airfield Walk – big turnout despite VERY cold weather !

On Saturday 17th March, people from all surrounding villages converged on Rivenhall Airfield for a walk along public rights of way to the proposed waste incinerator site.

The weather was astonishingly cold (as can be seen from the clothing being worn !) – a cutting wind coming in from the east, but despite that, many people actually walked from their villages the whole way, whilst others arrived by car or bus and at least one brave person came on a bike !

Brief talks were given along the way and at the gate to the site by Nick Unsworth from the campaign group PAIN and by Cllr. James Abbott. They covered some of the history of the site (both recent planning and its role in WW2) and the next steps in the campaign.

At the time of writing we still do not know when the latest planning applications (submitted in 2017) will be determined by ECC.

Green Drinks

The next Green Drinks will be on Thursday 19th April at 7.30pm at Fowlers Farm (just off the A120 at Galley's Corner roundabout Braintree).
We meet every 3rd Thursday of the month.
