School Crossing Patrols Under Threat from Essex County Council say Greens

17 March 2011

Cllr. James Abbott, Green Party District Councillor for Silver End recently contacted Essex County Council (ECC) to ask why the crossing patrol at Western Road, Silver End would be discontinued.

Cllr. James Abbott said

"I was told that the crossing patrol "did not meet current criteria" and that it and others where there was a zebra crossing in place would no longer have a lollipop person patrolling if the post became vacant.

Yet this crossing patrol has been in place for many years and provides a welcoming and safe route for young children and parents to get across a busy road to Silver End Primary School.

If crossings like this will no longer be patrolled because there is a zebra crossing in place, that must mean that many more lollipop patrols are under threat.

This sounds more like a crude cost cutting exercise by ECC, which in this case could raise risks on safety. The Western Road crossing is on a road which is particularly busy in the morning as traffic cuts through from Braintree and the A120 to the A12.

We are urging residents to object by writing to Cllr. Norman Hume, Transport and Highways Cabinet Member (1) at ECC."
