Survey of residents, part 2, shows even greater opposition to proposed Rivenhall Growth Location of 300 houses

20 September 2010

The second part of a survey of residents has found that of 170 people who took part in north east Witham, just 1 supports the Rivenhall Growth Location in the Braintree District Council Local Development Framework Core Strategy.

169 people objected to the site, which is mostly farmland, but includes part of the Rivenhall Oaks golf course.

Some people added comments on the reply slips that they strongly objected to the site and that they took exception to the statements by the Leader of Braintree District Council when in August he questioned the validity of responses to the BDC consultation held over the summer.

The method for the survey was the same as for the (part 1) survey of Rivenhall residents.

Residents were asked to return a slip showing whether they supported the Growth Location, objected to it or neither of those options.

The survey was organised by Cllr. James Abbott, District Councillor for Rivenhall and Cllr. Nick Scales, Town Councillor for Witham North ward. Local residents assisted with providing addresses for slips to be hand returned to.

Cllr. James Abbott said

"We are very pleased with the number of survey returns and wish to thank all the residents who took part.

The results show clearly the overwhelming rejection of the Growth Location and the very clearest response to the comments made by the Leader of the Council.

99.4% of those taking part reject the proposed Growth Location. Many commented about the loss of countryside, increased traffic and the lack of infrastructure to cope with such large scale development in the area.

We will now be presenting the results to BDC ahead of the crucial LDF Panel meeting on 22nd September."
