Greens get best ever results

6 June 2009

The Green Party got its best ever set of results at the Essex County Council elections held on June 4th.

Green candidates stood in 56 wards, 80% of the total.

The Greens beat Labour in 26 of those contests.

The average Green vote share increased from about 6% in 2005 to about 9% this time.

Green vote share improved in every district and borough where the party stood candidates, despite a higher number of candidates standing this time from the "non main three" parties.

Although not winning a seat, for the first time Green candidates took second place in 2 places, and become the main challengers next time in Witham Northern, where Braintree District Councillor James Abbott secured 23% of the vote behind the Tory winner on 32%.

With the Tories taking all 8 seats in Braintree District, the Green vote of 1307 in Witham Northern was also the highest tally by any opposition party in Braintree Disrict.

The Greens also moved into second place in Abbey Division, Colchester.

Elsewhere in the East of England, the Greens added 8 county seats to their growing list of principal authority councillors, with 5 gains in Norfolk, 2 in Suffolk and 1 in Cambridgeshire.
